Classical singularities in chaotic atom-surface scattering.

چکیده
In this paper we show that the diffraction condition for the scattering of atoms from surfaces leads to the appearance of a distinct type of classical singularity. Moreover, it is also shown that the onset of classical trapping or classical chaos is closely related to the bifurcation set of the diffraction-order function around the surface points presenting the rainbow effect. As an illustration of this dynamic, application to the scattering of He atoms by the stepped Cu~115! surface is presented using both a hard corrugated one-dimensional wall and a soft corrugated Morse potential. @S0163-1829~96!05639-1#

Scattering for a driven inverted Gaussian potential in terms of the chaotic invariant set
Abstract We study the classical electron scattering from a driven inverted Gaussian potential, an open system, in terms of its chaotic invariant set. This chaotic invariant set is described by a ternary horseshoe construction on an appropriate Poincare surface of section. We find the development parameters that describe the hyperbolic component of the chaotic invariant set. In addition, we show...

متن کاملQuantum manifestations of chaos in elastic atom-surface scattering
Quantum manifestations of chaos in the diffraction of atoms from corrugated surfaces, for a range of initial conditions easily attainable in scattering experiments, are presented and discussed. The appearance of strong oscillations in diffraction patterns is shown to be directly related to the presence of classical chaos and threshold effects. We also show that the autocorrelation function for ...
متن کاملPeriodic orbits and the homoclinic tangle in atom-surface chaotic scattering
In this paper the phase-space structure of a realistic chaotic scattering system, namely, the collisions of He atoms off Cu surfaces with different degrees of corrugation, is investigated. We demonstrate that the homoclinic tangle generated by a principal unstable periodic orbit, which corresponds to the unperturbed motion of the He atom traveling parallel to the surface in the asymptotic regio...
متن کاملQuantum Resonances in Chaotic Scattering
This letter summarizes numerical results from [1] which show that in quantum systems with chaotic classical dynamics, the number of scattering resonances near an energy E scales like h̄− D(KE)+1 2 . Here, KE denotes the subset of the classical energy surface {H = E} which stays bounded for all time under the flow of H and D (KE) denotes its fractal dimension. Since the number of bound states in ...
